History

In 1900, the Dodge Brothers Company was founded by Horace and John Dodge in Detroit, Michigan. The company produced engines and chassis components for various automobile manufacturers, including the Ford Motor Company. By 1916, the cars made by the Dodge Brothers Company were the second best selling vehicles in the United States. These early vehicles featured the first all steel bodies, while other cars were still being made with wooden bodies and steel frames.  They also had more power than the popular Ford Model T, 35 horsepower versus the 20 horsepower offered by the Model T. For the rest of the decade, the Dodge Brothers Company continued to grow.

1920 was a devastating year for the Dodge Brothers Company, as both brothers passed away. John Dodge died from pneumonia, which was followed by the passing of his brother from cirrhosis. The widows of both brothers were now in control of the company. The 1920s was a period of stagnation and declining sales for the Dodge Brothers Company. In 1928, the company was purchased by Chrysler.

After World War Two, Dodge slowly went from a budget division of Chrysler to a durable upscale vehicle. For the next two decades, Dodge would become a growing factor behind the success of Chrysler. In the mid-1950s, Dodge started focusing on the style of its bodies. They also introduced their first V8 engine during this time.

Major Events

Dodge has always been known for the quality trucks that they produce. They have had trucks in their lineup ever since the Dodge Brothers Company began producing automobiles. They were also the first company to begin making trucks more luxurious and comfortable for passengers. The Dodge Ram, first introduced in 1981, was one of the best selling trucks. In order to separate the market between passenger cars and trucks, Dodge created a separate division to sell their trucks. Taking the name of their best selling truck, the Ram division of Dodge was created in 2009.

In 2011, the Dodge brand was removed from production in Europe. Since 1922, Dodge has produced light trucks in the United Kingdom. This would help keep the Dodge brand going in Europe after being purchased by Chrysler. For the majority of the 20th century, Dodge primarily sold trucks and commercial vehicles in the UK and Europe. In June of 2011, Fiat decided to rename the Dodge Journey, naming the Fiat Freemont. Dodge may face the same fate in Australia, despite the fact that Dodge trucks have always sold well. Fiat announced that they will continue to manufacture the Dodge Journey in Australia through 2015.

In 1975, Dodge won the NASCAR Manufacuters’ Championship, winning 14 titles during the season. Richard Petty, the most successful NASCAR driver in history, was sponsored by Dodge during the 1975 season. In 1972, Petty had switched from driving  Plymouth to a Dodge Charger. The Dodge Charger was popular among racers and the general public. First introduced in 1965, the Dodge Charger remains in production to this day, now in its seventh generation.

Going Forward

Offering the Journey as an exclusive option to Australian customers, Dodge continues to refine the SUV and expand research and development into providing performance enhancing solutions while focusing on fuel economy. As part of their research, they are making more flexible options part of their build program so users can further customize their preferences through build kits and add-ons to base models. Using a more diversified approach to vehicle production continues to make Dodge an innovative producer and seller of high-quality vehicles.

The Dodge Journey sales continue to be on the rise in Australia and the brand seems to be enjoying a solid comeback here on the Australian market, while some speculate that the brand will join Fiat, that road remains to be explored, and at present the Journey is just waiting to begin.
